# Directions:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add a few drops of red gel food coloring and stir until desired shade is achieved. Mix in 2 cups Rice Krispies until evenly coated. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Mix in 2 cups Rice Krispies until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add the remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Add a few drops of blue gel food coloring and stir to combine. Mix in the remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm. Allow the treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into 16 equal squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They look absolutely stunning on a dessert table and taste even better than they appear.
  • Nobody expects homemade Rice Krispies treats to have this much personality, so you'll get all the credit.
  • The vanilla in the white layer adds a subtle depth that elevates the whole thing beyond basic cereal bars.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is non-negotiable here—liquid coloring will make your marshmallow mixture break and weep all over your cereal, which I discovered on my first attempt.
  • Low heat is your friend; if your marshmallows start to brown or smell toasted, you've gone too hot and the whole thing tastes slightly burnt.
  • Wiping your saucepan between layers prevents color bleeding, which sounds dramatic but really does matter for keeping those stripes crisp and distinct.
03 -
  • Make sure your parchment paper is completely flat in the pan before you start—wrinkles will show up in your final product and make cutting harder.
  • Room temperature Rice Krispies cereal works better than cereal straight from the box; let it sit out for five minutes if your kitchen is cool.
  • If a layer feels too stiff to press comfortably, cover the pan loosely with foil for a minute so the residual heat softens it just enough to work with.
